If you regularly bring your dog to the vet's it is highly probable that the vet had advised you on the kind of food that you should give your pet. The vet may have given you a list of the human foods that must not be given to the dog. Aware of the dangerous effects of these common foods, you surely would be firm in denying the begging pet. Not understanding the effect of these toxic foods, the youngsters of the family would still sneak a few bites to the dog under the table. The grapes or the chocolate being eaten by the child will be shared with the pet.
The list would have coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages as unsafe for the pet. Coffee and tea are made toxic by the caffeine they contain that is proven to have dangerous effects on the dog's cardiac and central nervous systems. A dog that has ingested alcohol will get intoxicated. A dog that has swallowed large amounts of coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages can die.
Chocolates and candies are commonly seen in homes of people with sweet tooth. Chocolates may be fattening but this food is said to be good for the heart. Chocolates and sugar-free candies are dangerous foods for dogs. The stimulant Theobromine in chocolates causes stimulation of the dog's cardiac and nervous systems. The Xylitol in sugar-free candies causes blood sugar to plummet so that the dog can die in minutes after ingesting even a small amount of these candies.
Raw fish and raw eggs are on the list of foods toxic to dogs. The avidin enzyme in raw eggs prevents biotin from being absorbed by the body and this condition causes the dog to have poor coat and other skin pproblems. Raw eggs also have Salmonella. Regular consumption of raw fish would result to thiamine deficiency and dogs with this condition would have poor appetite and suffer from repeated seizures that usually results to death.
Sharing with the pet whatever food is being eaten is a common habit of dog owners. This habit is more commonly seen in children as they usually form a close bond with the pet. However, it is the responsibility of the parents to make the children understand the dangers of sharing common foods with the pet. Given the close ties humans have with dogs, it would be very hard to remember that some foods safe for human consumption are poisonous to dogs thus a list of these toxic foods posted in a prominent place would serve as reminder to all the family members.
