Cadillac's new XTS model, due to come out next year, will replace both the DTS and STS models. No date has yet been declared for production to start. However, GM first plans to sell off the remaining DTD and STS models on their dealer's lots.
Based off concept automobile show
The Platinum concept auto at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show was what Cadillac used to start its XTS. The car will be built on a stretched form of GM's front-wheel-drive Epsilon II platform (which underpins cars as diverse as the Chevy Malibu and the Buick LaCrosse) and will be built at GM's Grand River plant in Lansing, Mich.
Auto for convenience
There will be a longer rear overhang than the concept car while being just a little bit narrower. It will even feature infotainment and connectivity features for both front and rear-seat passengers. The auto likely will be powered by GM's direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6. For a gentler ride, it will employ electronically controlled shock absorbers.
The XTS may have different V-6 power plants, an option for all-wheel drive and possibly a drive line for a plug-in hybrid if the model is true to the concept. There is a chance than an 8-cylinder engine option will be added. That is just a rumor for now.
Cadillac and BMW against one another
Now that both the DTS and STS models are being exchanged in Cadillac's lineup, the current entry-level CTS can move slightly up-market in an attempt to become a rival to BMW's 5-series and the Mercedes E-class. The BMW c-class and 3 series may end up with new competition in summer 2012 with this change. A smaller ATS sedan will be coming soon.
Out with the old cars to make way for the new
The STS is not being built by Cadillac already. The final DTS models will be built within the next three to four weeks. Before the XTS replacement is built, Cadillac plans on selling the 900 STS models and 3,000 DTS models left.
