Easy Christmas Light Installation For Outside The Home

By Claudette Lambert

By following commonsense Christmas light installation procedures your house, fence, and garden might well be the subject of envious looks during the festive period. Whether this happens might well hinge on the types of lights that are used to decorate the house. And choosing what lights to use is not always down to cost considerations.

Choosing the right lighting is usually a simple matter of picking out a style that is compatible with your home. For instance, a ranch would most likely have a completely different scheme than a Victorian house. Any lights should enhance the look of the house as well as the area because it might be embarrassing if neighbors start to question your taste.

Bear in mind that strings of lights, and lots of them, seem to enhance the look of a house. It becomes a beacon which draws in admirable stares. Once the appropriate decorations have been chosen, examine them before getting started. They should be tested, the wires and cords checked for fraying. It's advisable to throw any frayed wires away as they might be a health hazard.

Power supplies that are closest to the rooftop are the best to use and sometimes these are located near the porch. If a power source on the side of the house is to be used make sure that this is well protected from the elements as well as from sprinkler systems.

The installation is only as good as the tools that are used for the job. It goes without saying that a sturdy ladder is a must and maybe get someone to help, someone that can perhaps hold the ladder if it isn't so steady. Hopefully, this person will be strong too as the work does call for plenty of lifting and aligning of the lights, a task made easier with help.

Though it is better to be working alongside someone, for those who are working alone it might be an idea to use a bucket, to pull materials up from the ladder with. Each time the same materials are carried up the ladder you risk falling off. As an aside, when on the ladder it's unwise to reach for anything that is not at arm's length, as this could cause the ladder to become unsteady.

When using fasteners to help secure the lights to the property, it is best to try and use ones that do not contain metal. Metal fasteners can have a propensity to rust when exposed to the elements. Plastic and rubber fasteners are resistant to water and they have no conductive powers, which means no electric shocks. They should be placed at equal distances and obviously the electricity should not be turned on before all the lights have been switched on.

The most obvious part of Christmas light installation is to hang them around the property. Starting at the power source, work your way around the fasteners until you come to the end. After doing the house you can do the fence, tree and create a spectacle that could have people casting envious eyes at your home.
